A storm-dark watercolor wash can bloom into blue at its edges, while a flat screen chip stays perfectly uniform, yet both may be called Payne’s Grey. That mismatch is the key to understanding this color. Once you separate a variable artist’s mixture from a fixed digital reference, choosing a tube, mixing an alternative, and building a useful palette becomes much easier.

 

 

What Color Is Payne’s Grey?

Payne’s Grey is a dark, muted blue-gray. Concentrated paint can appear nearly black, while a thin wash or pale tint usually makes its blue bias easier to see.   • Daniel Smith Extra Fine Watercolors: PB29 ultramarine and PBk9 ivory black produce a semi-transparent, low-staining, granulating paint rated Lightfastness I, Excellent.
  • QoR Modern Watercolor: its standard Payne’s Gray combines PBk7, PB15:3, and PV19. The company also lists a separate Payne’s Gray (Violet) made with PBk7, PV29, and PB15:3.

These are not minor naming differences. One version may stain the paper more readily, while another creates visible granulating texture. A painter should therefore treat the name as the start of a product description, not as a complete formula. Likewise, a screen swatch of #536878 cannot predict how any of these mixtures will look in a wet wash, a dry brush mark, or a white tint.

 

 

Where Payne’s Grey Came From

The color takes its name from William Payne, a British watercolorist who lived circa 1760 to 1830. Its history helps explain its present identity: Payne’s Grey developed as a useful mixed dark rather than as one newly discovered pigment.

That working context matters. A dark violet-blue mixture could organize shadows and values without producing the visually blunt result that plain black might create in a landscape. Payne is also reported to have recommended the mixture to students as an alternative to black.

 

How the Recipe Changed

There is no safely established single recipe that can be called the definitive original. One specialist account attributes to Payne a mixture of iron blue PB27, commonly called Prussian blue, with yellow ochre and crimson lake. A manufacturer’s historical account instead describes ultramarine with lamp black and, sometimes, crimson. The disagreement should remain visible rather than being resolved through guesswork.

An 1893 color manual adds another period viewpoint. It described Payne’s Grey as more lilac than neutral tint and particularly useful in watercolor. The same manual criticized its use in oil, but that comment records 19th-century materials and practice. It is not comparative testing of today’s oil paints.

A ready-made Payne’s Grey is a convenience mixture, meaning several pigments have already been combined to provide a repeatable dark. It can save time, but a mixed alternative gives the painter more control over temperature, neutrality, and texture.

Payne’s Grey is especially practical for monochrome value studies. Painting a subject with one dark mixture and the white of the paper separates the problem of light and shadow from the problem of hue. It can also establish cool shadows, stormy skies, distant rocks, and dark water when introduced carefully.

Begin with a light wash and build darker passages in layers. This reveals the paint’s blue or violet undertone before a concentrated application hides it. A gradual wash also shows whether the formulation granulates, stains, or dries flatter than expected. How to Avoid a Flat or Muddy Mixture

Carbon-black convenience mixtures can sometimes dry with a duller surface appearance, but that observation is formulation-dependent rather than a rule for all Payne’s Grey paints.
