Robert Arneson was born in Benicia, California, and spent most of his life there. He studied cartooning at the neighboring College of Marin and then at the California College of Arts and Crafts. Arneson was invited to create a ceramic course at the University of California, in 1962, where he met artists including William T. Clayworks positioned Spinski as a peer to the exhibition’s other ceramic pioneers, including Patti Warashina, Robert Arneson, David Gilhooly, Jack Earl, Richard Shaw, Clayton Bailey, and Marilyn Levine. Bailey, in particular, became a lifetime partner and friend.
