Colors That Start With O: 240 Color Names and HEX Codes

Colors that start with O range from pale Oat Flour and ocean blues to earthy Ochre, near-black Obsidian Shard, and fiery Orange Red. This atlas places 240 names, digital values, and swatches within easy reach. It also separates standardized CSS colors from creative catalog names whose HEX codes should stay attached.

What Counts as a Color That Starts With O?

This atlas contains 240 distinct displayed names beginning with O. Six belong to the standardized CSS named-color set and have fixed values in sRGB, the standard screen color space used here. The other 234 are curated design-catalog names that support browsing and naming but are not official standards.

Colors That Start With O

The Six Standardized CSS O Colors

The standardized set consists of Old Lace #FDF5E6, Olive #808000, Olive Drab #6B8E23, Orange #FFA500, Orange Red #FF4500, and Orchid #DA70D6. Their copy-ready CSS identifiers are oldlace, olive, olivedrab, orange, orangered, and orchid. The spaces and capital letters in the table are display formatting, not part of the literal identifiers.

A familiar name may have a different value in a paint range, creative catalog, or another naming system. When a catalog value conflicts with one of these six CSS names, the standardized CSS value controls the entry below.

Curated Names Versus Color Standards

The remaining name-to-HEX associations come from the handpicked meodai color-names catalog. Its contribution rules exclude duplicate names or HEX values, protected brands, offensive names, numbered sequences, and AI-generated names. Those controls make it a useful design reference, but they do not make its names technical standards.

Treat every entry marked “Curated design name” as one particular association. Save its code with its name because another catalog, paint maker, or designer may use the same wording for a visibly different color.

Colors That Start With O: 240 Names and HEX Codes

The groups remain alphabetically continuous. HEX controls each digital entry, and every RGB triplet and visible swatch agrees with its six-digit code. The status column distinguishes literal CSS identifiers from non-standard catalog names.

How to Use These O Colors in Design

A name helps people discuss a color, but the HEX value tells digital tools which sRGB color to display. Begin with the job the color must perform, then evaluate its exact value in the intended setting.

Colors That Start With O — Material studyAI-generated editorial illustration; not a measured color sample.

Choosing Between a CSS Keyword and a HEX Value

Use one of the six standardized identifiers when readable code and established CSS behavior are useful. For example, color: orange; and color: #FFA500; describe the same digital color. Multiword display names require the unspaced tokens oldlace, olivedrab, and orangered.

HEX is clearer for every catalog entry because it preserves the intended value even if another source interprets the name differently. Keep the code in design tokens, style guides, or asset notes. Oxford Blue can remain the human-friendly label, while #002147 prevents ambiguity.

Checking Text and Background Contrast

Do not infer readability from a name, hue family, or first glance at a swatch. Calculate the contrast ratio between the exact foreground and background values. WCAG 2.2 sets a minimum of 4.5:1 for ordinary text and 3:1 for large text. Large text means at least 18 point, equivalent to 24 CSS pixels, at regular weight, or at least 14 point, about 18.7 CSS pixels, when bold. Do not round a failing result upward.

Run the check again whenever either color changes. The same orange may pass against one dark blue and fail against a pale cream, so accessibility belongs to the pair rather than either color alone.

Building a Palette Without Overloading It

Assign colors jobs before adding more of them. A restrained neutral can cover the largest surfaces, a darker O color can organize text or structure, and a stronger orange, orchid, or ocean tone can mark actions and focal points. This role-based approach is more useful than treating every appealing swatch as an equal accent.

A guide to complementary colors can help locate strong hue oppositions, while these practical color combinations offer broader palette ideas. Preserve the selected HEX values and test the finished palette in context.

Screen Color, Print Color, and Physical Materials

The table is a digital sRGB reference. Its swatches do not promise an identical result from ink, paint, dye, stone, or another physical material.

Why HEX Does Not Define a Paint Color

A six-digit HEX code specifies red, green, and blue channel values in the sRGB screen color space. Paint creates color through physical materials and reflected light, so a screen code is not a mixing recipe or measured paint specification. For pigment work, consult guidance on mixing colors and evaluate real samples under the light in which they will be seen.

The same caution applies to material-inspired names such as Opal, Obsidian, Oyster, and Oxblood. Each listed swatch is a selected digital reference, not a claim that every specimen or material has that appearance.

Why CMYK Needs a Print Profile

Displays and printers cannot always reproduce the same range of colors. A print workflow may need gamut mapping, which adjusts a screen color to fit the range a printer can produce. The result also changes with the paper or other printing surface, measurements describing the printer and ink setup, and the method used to divide RGB color among cyan, magenta, yellow, and black inks.

That is why the atlas does not include a generic CMYK column. Choose the intended printer and paper, obtain the appropriate International Color Consortium (ICC) output profile for that setup, convert within a color-managed workflow, and assess a proof rather than relying on an unprofiled four-number conversion.

Ochre as a Material, Not One Fixed Swatch

The table gives Ochre the selected digital reference #CC7722, but physical ochres are materials rather than screen coordinates. A documented red ochre sample examined in conservation research contained fine hematite and quartz, showing how mineral composition can sit behind the visible color.

A digital ochre is useful for interface design, illustration, and palette planning. It cannot describe every ochre deposit, prepared pigment, binder mixture, surface, or aged paint layer.

Frequently Asked Questions

These answers clarify the atlas’s scope, the six CSS identifiers, and the limits of using digital swatches for accessibility checks or paint mixing.

How Many Colors Start With O?

This curated atlas contains 240 distinct O-initial names. It does not claim that English has exactly 240, since non-standard design catalogs can adopt additional labels and associations.

Which O Colors Are Official CSS Names?

The six standardized display names are Old Lace, Olive, Olive Drab, Orange, Orange Red, and Orchid. Their literal CSS identifiers are oldlace, olive, olivedrab, orange, orangered, and orchid.

Is Oxford Blue Always the Same HEX Value?

No. Oxford Blue is a descriptive catalog name here, not a standardized CSS keyword. This atlas associates it with #002147, so keep that code attached whenever the exact digital value matters.

Can I Use These HEX Codes to Mix Paint?

No. They can provide a visual starting point on an sRGB screen, but they do not specify pigments, proportions, binders, opacity, or lighting. Compare physical mixtures and dried samples instead.

How Do I Know Whether an O Color Is Accessible?

Test its exact HEX value against the exact neighboring background or foreground. Use at least 4.5:1 for ordinary text. The 3:1 threshold applies only to text at least 18 point, or at least 14 point when bold, and a failing result must not be rounded upward.
