Colors That Start With L: 240 Names With HEX and RGB

Colors that start with L stretch from airy Lavender and Linen to sharp Lime, mineral-like Lapis Lazuli, and near-black Liquorice. This atlas groups 240 names by status and alphabetizes them within the standardized and curated sets. Use it to compare matching HEX, RGB, and digital swatches while keeping screen colors separate from paint, pigment, stone, and print.

How This L Color Atlas Is Built

The atlas contains exactly 240 distinct displayed names: 20 distinct CSS colors represented by 22 W3C keyword spellings, plus 220 names selected from the human-curated meodai color-names catalog as it appeared on September 22, 2026. Every displayed name begins with L. The collection avoids counting capitalization changes, punctuation changes, or gray and grey aliases as extra colors.

Colors That Start With L

Standardized and creative names serve different purposes. A CSS keyword token has a defined browser value. A curated catalog name offers a useful design label and recorded color association, but it is not an official web standard, paint specification, or universal definition of the word.

What Counts as an L Color?

A name qualifies when its displayed English form starts with L and has one recorded six-digit HEX association. If an exact catalog name collides with a CSS keyword, the standardized CSS value takes precedence. The tokens lightgray and lightgrey are aliases for one value, as are lightslategray and lightslategrey, so the grey spellings do not create extra color rows.

The count concerns distinct displayed names, not necessarily distinct numerical colors. Two genuinely different names may point to the same value, while a familiar word may receive different values in unrelated systems. The Status column distinguishes standardized CSS rows from non-standard catalog labels.

Material-derived is a secondary qualifier for a catalog name borrowed from a documented physical substance or colorant. It does not turn the digital reference into a measured material sample. The qualifier is used only where that connection is supported, such as Lapis Lazuli. Lake Blue remains a creative catalog label rather than the name of a specific historical lake pigment.

How to Read the Name, HEX, RGB, Color, and Status Fields

HEX is the controlling digital value. It uses a hash followed by six hexadecimal digits, with two digits each for red, green, and blue in sRGB, a common color space for screens. The RGB triplet and visible Color cell are derived from that same code, keeping every row internally consistent.

The swatches are digital previews, not measured samples of printed ink, dyed cloth, artist paint, stone, or an aged artwork. Check the Status field before assuming that a memorable name has a standardized meaning.

240 Colors That Start With L

The tables are grouped by status, with 20 entries in each subgroup. Names are alphabetized within the standardized set and the curated catalog set. The standardized colors come first; all later groups contain attributable but non-standard catalog labels. Names such as Lemon, Lilac, and Lapis Lazuli remain useful search and design references, but their codes apply to the stated catalog entry rather than every possible use of the word.

Standardized CSS L Colors

These rows represent 20 distinct CSS colors. W3C provides 22 L-initial keyword spellings because the two gray and grey pairs are aliases with identical values. The table uses spaced, title-cased labels for readability. The exact code tokens are lavender, lavenderblush, lawngreen, lemonchiffon, lightblue, lightcoral, lightcyan, lightgoldenrodyellow, lightgray, lightgrey, lightgreen, lightpink, lightsalmon, lightseagreen, lightskyblue, lightslategray, lightslategrey, lightsteelblue, lightyellow, lime, limegreen, and linen.

How to Use L Colors in Digital Design

A large list becomes useful when selection begins with function. Decide whether the color must support a page background, readable text, a control, a warning, a chart category, or a small accent. Then compare the actual codes in context instead of choosing solely because a name sounds calm, natural, luxurious, or energetic.

Colors That Start With L — Material studyAI-generated editorial illustration; not a measured color sample.

Choose by Role, Not by a Color-Name Story

Names help people remember and discuss colors, but they do not establish universal emotional effects. Start with hue relationships, value, saturation, and visual hierarchy. A grounding in basic color theory can help explain why two colors support or compete with each other without assigning them fixed personalities.

For a pale background, a light entry such as Linen may offer a useful starting point, while dark Liquorice or Lead may suit a contrasting structural role. Attention-grabbing yellows and greens such as Lemon Glacier or Lucent Lime can work in small areas, but their names alone say nothing about legibility. Test the actual combination at its intended size.

Keep media distinct. These HEX references describe sRGB screen colors, not print specifications or physical paint recipes. Preview a screen design in its intended environment and treat each listed code as a digital reference.

Check Contrast Before Using a Color for Text

No isolated swatch is automatically accessible. Contrast is a relationship between foreground and background colors, so the same L color may pass in one pairing and fail in another. Under WCAG 2.2, normal text needs a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1. Large-scale text needs at least 3:1; WCAG defines that category as text at least 18 point in regular weight or at least 14 point in bold.

Run the final foreground and background codes through a contrast checker. Recheck hover, focus, disabled, visited, selected, and error states rather than assuming the default state covers the whole interface. Very pale colors generally need much darker text, while very dark colors generally need much lighter text, but calculation should decide the result.

Keep Meaning Independent of Color

Color must not be the only visual signal for information, an action, a requested response, or a distinction. Pair a red error state with explanatory text or an icon. Add patterns or labels to chart categories. Mark links with more than a subtle hue shift, and give keyboard focus a clearly perceivable indicator.

This principle also protects a design when displays, lighting, or color perception change the apparent difference between nearby tones. A label such as Lime or Lavender can support team communication, but the interface still needs structure that works when the color cue is missed.

When an L Name Is a Material, Not a Screen Color

Some L names borrow their identity from minerals, pigments, plants, foods, textiles, or other objects. The table records digital catalog associations for those names. It does not claim that the objects themselves possess one permanent sRGB value.

Lapis Lazuli and Natural Ultramarine

Lapis lazuli is a mineral material with a historical connection to natural ultramarine pigment. Museum research has identified natural ultramarine made from lapis lazuli mined in Afghanistan in paintings by Raphael. That physical history is different from assigning a convenient screen code to the name Lapis Lazuli.

The table’s #26619C value is therefore a curated digital reference, not a universal measurement of every stone or batch of pigment. Mineral composition, preparation, surrounding materials, illumination, and the viewed surface all affect a physical object, while the table reproduces the specified sRGB reference.

Lake Pigments and Changing Material Color

A lake pigment is not a single hue called Lake. It is a class of colorant made by associating a dyestuff with an inorganic substrate, meaning a mineral-based solid support that carries the dye. Such pigments can be transparent in oil. Their appearance and durability can vary with preparation and lightfastness, or resistance to fading under light.

That distinction matters when reading names such as Lake Blue. Here, Lake Blue is a creative catalog label attached to #009EAF, not proof that the swatch represents a particular historical lake pigment. Layers of translucent paint also interact optically with the ground and neighboring layers, something a flat digital cell cannot reproduce.

Frequently Asked Questions

These answers clarify browser standards, naming ambiguity, digital-value agreement, and accessible use.

Which L Colors Have Standardized CSS Keywords?

The standardized set contains 20 distinct colors, represented by 22 L-initial keyword spellings. It runs from Lavender through Linen and includes the Light family, Lime, and Lime Green. The lightgrey and lightslategrey spellings share the values of their gray counterparts and are not counted as extra colors. The table labels are spaced for readability; CSS code uses the exact unspaced tokens listed above.

Is There One Correct HEX for Lavender, Lilac, Lemon, or Lime?

Only within a stated standard or catalog. CSS precisely defines Lavender and Lime, while the dated meodai catalog, products, and individual designers may use familiar words differently. The Status field identifies standardized rows. For closer comparisons, see the guides to the lavender color, lime green color, and lilac vs. lavender.

Do the HEX, RGB, and Swatch Values Represent the Same Color?

Yes. Within each row, the six-digit HEX value controls both the RGB triplet and the displayed swatch. For example, #26619C converts to RGB 38, 97, 156. This agreement describes the digital sRGB reference, not a physical color sample.

Can Any of These Colors Be Used for Accessible Text?

Potentially, but accessibility cannot be assigned to a color in isolation. Test the chosen foreground against its exact background and meet the applicable contrast threshold. Also preserve meaning with text, icons, patterns, or other cues instead of relying on color alone.
