What are Squirrels?

Squirrels are small rodents that belong to the squirrel family. They have conspicuous, bushy tails and are usually brown or gray in color. Squirrels are known for their ability to climb trees and jump from branch to branch. They are also known to gather nuts in the fall and store them in their nests in preparation for winter.

Squirrels live in forests, parks and gardens all over the world. In Europe, squirrels are very common and can be found in many urban areas. In North America, there are several species of squirrels, including the red squirrel and the gray squirrel. In Asia and Africa, there are also species of squirrels that live in trees. Squirrels are part of our natural environment and are an important part of the ecosystem.

Squirrel Facts: Species, Habitat and Habits

Squirrels belong to the family Sciuridae, which includes more than 200 species. Biologists usually sort them into three groups: tree squirrels, ground squirrels and flying squirrels. Knowing which group a squirrel belongs to explains a lot about how it looks and behaves, which helps when you decide what to draw and color around it.

Types and Sizes of Squirrels

Tree squirrels are the ones most people picture, with long bushy tails and strong legs for climbing. The eastern gray squirrel weighs roughly one pound and has a tail nearly as long as its body. The American red squirrel is noticeably smaller, while the fox squirrel is among the largest tree squirrels in North America and often looks rusty orange or tan.

Ground squirrels spend most of their time on the ground and dig burrows. The group includes chipmunks, marmots and prairie dogs, which are all relatives of the tree squirrel. The Arctic ground squirrel even lives on the cold northern tundra.

Size varies enormously across the family. The African pygmy squirrel is only a few inches long, while the Indian giant squirrel measures well over two feet including its tail and has rich maroon, orange and cream fur.

Where Squirrels Live and What They Eat

Squirrels are native to every continent except Australia and Antarctica. They live in forests, parks, backyards, mountains, deserts and grasslands. Tree squirrels build a nest called a drey from twigs, leaves and moss, usually in the fork of a tree, or they move into a hollow in a trunk. Ground squirrels live in underground burrows instead.

Their menu is wider than most people expect. Squirrels eat acorns, hickory nuts, seeds, tree buds, fruit and mushrooms, and they sometimes eat insects or bird eggs. Most tree squirrels are active during the day, so daylight is the best time to watch them.

How Squirrels Climb, Hide Food and Stay Safe

  • Ankles that turn around: A squirrel can rotate its hind ankles about 180 degrees, which lets it climb down a tree headfirst. Sharp, curved claws grip the bark, and each foot has four toes in front and five behind.
  • Teeth that never stop growing: A squirrel’s front teeth keep growing throughout its life. Gnawing on nuts and bark wears them down so they stay the right length.
  • Hiding food in many places: Squirrels bury nuts in lots of separate spots to eat later. Some are never found again, and forgotten acorns can sprout into oak trees.
  • A tail with many jobs: The tail helps a squirrel balance on thin branches, gives shade on hot days and works like a blanket in cold weather.
  • Eyes on the sides of the head: This gives squirrels a wide view of their surroundings, which helps them spot hawks, owls and foxes.
  • Gliding instead of flying: Flying squirrels cannot truly fly. A flap of skin stretches between their front and back legs, so they glide from tree to tree, mostly at night, with large dark eyes for seeing in the dark.

Best Colors for Squirrel Coloring Pages

A squirrel’s color depends on its species, so you can choose shades that match the animal you want to bring to life.

  • Eastern gray squirrel: medium gray on the back and tail, with a cream or white belly. A touch of light brown on the back looks natural, and pale silver tips on the tail make it look fluffy.
  • Red squirrel: rusty orange or reddish brown on the back and tail, with a white belly.
  • Fox squirrel: orange brown or tan on the back, with a rusty orange belly.
  • Black squirrel: charcoal black or very dark gray. This is simply a gray squirrel with a dark coat, so leave a few light spots for highlights.

Acorns look best in golden brown or tan with darker brown caps. Bark works well in dark brown mixed with gray, and leaves can be green in summer or yellow, orange and red for an autumn scene. Use black or dark brown for the eyes and a pink or dark brown nose. To make fur look soft, color a layer of light brown first, then add darker brown strokes in the direction the fur grows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do squirrels hibernate?

Tree squirrels such as gray, red and fox squirrels do not hibernate. They stay active all winter, living off the food they buried and resting in their nests during the worst weather. Ground squirrels, including the Arctic ground squirrel, do hibernate through the cold months.

Is it okay to feed wild squirrels?

Wild squirrels do best on their natural foods. If you offer anything, a small amount of unsalted nuts in the shell is a better choice than bread, candy or other human snacks. Squirrels can bite when frightened or cornered, so it is best to watch from a distance, and feeding wildlife is restricted in some parks, so check the local rules.

Why do squirrels bury nuts and then forget them?

In autumn squirrels gather more food than they can eat right away, so they bury it in many small spots to eat later. They find most of it again by smell and memory, but some stays in the ground, and a forgotten acorn may grow into a tree. Gray squirrels have even been observed pretending to bury a nut when other animals are watching.

Why do squirrels flick their tails?

A flicking tail is a form of communication. Squirrels often twitch their tails when they notice danger, such as a hawk, a cat or a dog, and they may bark or chatter at the same time. The signal warns other squirrels nearby and can also show irritation.

How long do squirrels live?

In the wild, many squirrels live only a few years because of predators, cars, harsh winters and food shortages. Those that survive their first year can live considerably longer. Squirrels cared for in captivity have lived for more than ten years.
