Fun Facts About Spring

Two Beginnings, One Season

Spring does not start on a single agreed upon day. Meteorologists in the Northern Hemisphere mark it as beginning on March 1, a fixed date that makes it easy to compare whole months of weather data year after year. Astronomers use a different marker: the spring equinox, which falls around March 20, when the sun crosses the celestial equator and day and night are close to equal in length almost everywhere on Earth. That near balance is where the word “equinox” comes from. While the Northern Hemisphere is easing into spring, the Southern Hemisphere is doing the opposite and sliding into autumn at the very same moment.

The reason any of this happens at all comes down to a tilt. Earth’s axis leans about 23.5 degrees, and as the planet orbits the sun, the Northern Hemisphere gradually turns to face the sun more directly each spring. Days lengthen, the sun climbs higher in the sky, and the ground and air slowly warm. Earth is not moving closer to the sun during this time. The seasons are a matter of angle, not distance.

Where the Word Spring Comes From

The English word “spring” started out describing a leap or a sudden appearance, and it was first attached to the season to describe plants springing up out of the ground, in the old phrase “the spring of the year.” Over time it pushed out an older English word, “Lent,” which today survives only as the name for the weeks of fasting before Easter. German kept a similar pair of words: “Frühling” is the everyday term, but the older word “Lenz” is still used in poetry and place names.

The Race of the Early Bloomers

Crocuses, daffodils, tulips, and snowdrops are usually the first flowers to appear each spring, and that is not an accident of timing. All four grow from bulbs or corms that store up a full year’s worth of energy underground. That stored reserve lets them push up and bloom before the trees overhead grow leaves and block their sunlight. It is a genuine race against the tree canopy, not a coincidence of the calendar.

The three most common early flowers are easy to tell apart once you know what to look for. A daffodil has six petals spread flat around a central trumpet shaped cup, which is its clearest signature. A tulip has six petals closed into a smooth cup with no center piece at all, sitting on a sturdy stem. A crocus is smaller, has no true stem, and only opens fully in sunshine, staying closed on cloudy days. A snowdrop nods downward on its stem, with three long outer petals and three short inner ones, each marked with a small spot near the tip. A hyacinth, when it appears, grows as a tight, tall spike packed with small star shaped flowers.

Color matters too, and it is worth getting right on the page. Crocuses come in purple, white, or yellow. Daffodils are yellow or white. Tulips grow in nearly every color except true blue. Cherry blossoms range from white to soft pink, and dandelions are bright yellow before turning into white puffballs. One detail almost everyone gets wrong: fresh spring leaves are noticeably lighter and more yellow green than the deep, saturated green of summer foliage. Spring also brings movement along with color. Swallows and storks return from their winter grounds in the south, and frogs and toads migrate to their breeding ponds on the first mild, damp nights. Spring is as much a season of motion as it is a date on the calendar.

Printing and Coloring Tips

Every page in this set is sized for A4 paper and prints best on plain printer paper for a quick page or on heavier cardstock, around 200 to 250 gsm, if you plan to use markers or watercolor and want to avoid bleed through. In your printer settings, choose “Actual Size” or 100 percent rather than “Fit to Page,” so the artwork keeps its proportions and none of the design gets cropped at the edges.

For younger children, look for the simplest sheets in the gallery, the ones with large shapes, thick outlines, and few small details, such as a big tulip or a simple flower bed. Older kids do well with the medium pages, like the watering can or the garden bed scenes, which have more shapes to fill in without becoming tedious. Detailed pages such as the greenhouse or the tulip field are better suited to teens and adults who want a longer, more absorbing project.

What to Do With Finished Pages

  • A spring garland. Cut out the flowers and animals from a few finished pages, punch a hole in the top of each, and string them together with twine for a window or a shelf.
  • A homemade card. Color one of the smaller flower pages, trim it down, and glue it onto a folded piece of cardstock for an Easter or spring birthday card.
  • A classroom bulletin board. Arrange a set of finished pages by theme, such as all the baby animals or all the flowers, to build a colorful spring display.
  • A keepsake binder. Punch holes in the finished pages and collect them in a binder by year, so you can look back at how a child’s coloring style changes from one spring to the next.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these spring coloring pages really free?

Yes. All 36 pages in this collection are free to download and print for personal and classroom use.

What age are these coloring pages for?

The collection covers a wide range, from very easy pages with large, simple shapes for toddlers and preschoolers to detailed scenes meant for older children, teens, and adults. Each section mixes difficulty levels, so there is something for nearly every age.

What colors should I use for the flowers and animals?

There is no single correct answer, and coloring is meant to be enjoyed freely. That said, if you want a realistic look: crocuses in purple, white, or yellow; daffodils in yellow or white; tulips in almost any color except true blue; and fresh spring leaves in a lighter, more yellow green than a deep summer green.

Can I use these pages in my classroom?

Yes. Teachers are welcome to print these pages for classroom use, seasonal bulletin boards, or take home activities.

What paper works best for printing?

Regular printer paper is fine for a quick coloring session. If you are using markers, gel pens, or watercolor, heavier cardstock will hold up better and prevent colors from bleeding through to the next page.

Do I need any special software to open the pages?

No. Each page downloads as a standard PDF file, which opens in any web browser or free PDF reader and prints directly from there.
