Fun Facts About Sunflowers
Sunflowers are one of those plants that almost everybody can recognize on sight, but there is more going on inside that big golden head than most people realize. Here are a few things worth knowing before you pick up your pencils.
Why They Are Called Sunflowers
The name sunflower comes from a real behavior. Young flower buds actually follow the sun across the sky during the day, a movement called heliotropism, and this tracking is strongest before the flower fully opens. The scientific name, Helianthus, comes straight from Greek, combining helios for sun and anthos for flower. So the plant is quite literally named after what it does.
One Flower Head, Hundreds of Blooms
What looks like a single flower is actually a whole cluster of them. The center of a sunflower is packed with hundreds, sometimes thousands, of tiny individual blooms arranged in a tight spiral pattern. That spiral is not random either. The number of spiral lines follows the Fibonacci sequence, the same pattern of numbers found in pinecones and seashells. It is a fun detail to point out to kids while they color the middle of the flower.
From Field to Table
Sunflowers are native to North America and were grown as a crop by Native American peoples thousands of years before the plant ever reached Europe. The seeds are eaten raw or roasted, pressed into sunflower oil, and used as bird feed, and in some kitchens even the young flower buds are cooked and eaten, much like artichokes. Sunflowers can also grow surprisingly tall. The tallest one ever measured stood over nine meters high, well above the roof of an average house.
Tips for Printing and Coloring
Every page in this set is sized for standard A4 paper, so there is no need to adjust the layout before printing. In your printer settings, choose black and white or grayscale to save ink, and select fit to page rather than actual size so the artwork fills the sheet properly.
For paper, a regular printer sheet works fine for pencils, crayons, or markers with fine tips. If your child likes to use watercolors, markers, or anything wet, switch to a slightly heavier cardstock so the page does not wrinkle or bleed through.
As for which sheet suits which age, the pages with one large flower, thick outlines, and simple rounded leaves are the easiest and work well for kindergarten age children who are still learning to color inside the lines. The field, harvest, and pattern designs have finer details and more small sections, which makes them a better fit for grade school kids and adults looking for something a bit more relaxing and detailed to work on.
Ideas for Your Finished Sheets
Once a page is colored, there is no need to let it sit in a drawer. Here are a few simple ways to put it to use.
- Classroom display: Pin finished sheets to a bulletin board for a bright, instant fall or summer display.
- Homemade cards: Cut out a favorite flower and glue it onto folded cardstock for a quick birthday or thank you card.
- Window art: Tape colored pages to a sunny window so the light shines through the petals.
- Keepsake book: Punch holes and tie a few sheets together with ribbon to build a small seasonal coloring book to keep or gift.
