With a mallet in each hand and a wide grin, a skeleton stands behind a nine-bar xylophone on sawhorse-style legs. A single eighth note and a beamed pair of notes float on either side of its head. Each bar has two small holes, which makes a neat spot for a contrasting shade.

Music and Dance

A skeleton in a bubble helmet and chunky boots stands on the cratered moon and waves one hand. Beside it, a small rover with a dish antenna and a star flag waits, and Earth hangs in a sky with five stars. The continents on the globe are thin, fine shapes, so they need a sharp pencil.

Full Human Skeleton with Two Circles

A front-view human skeleton stands with arms slightly out and palms open, drawn with wide round eyes and a toothy grin. Human Spine Side View with Potted Plant

Side view of a human spine with sacrum and tailbone beside a small potted plant with five leaves
A tall side view of the human spine curves from the neck down to the sacrum and tailbone. The sacrum has four small round openings, and each vertebra is separated by a thin disc. A small pot with five leaves stands at lower left. The large, plain vertebral bodies are easy to fill, but the spiky projections take a sharp pencil.

Skeleton Hand Reaching for the Sun

Outline of a skeleton hand with spread fingers, wrist bones and forearm, with a round sun with rays at upper right
An open skeleton hand is seen from the back with the fingers spread and the thumb stretched out to the right. Every finger bone and the small wrist bones are drawn as separate closed shapes, and the two forearm bones run off the bottom edge. A plain round sun with short rays sits in the upper right corner. The sun is an easy, open area, while the small wrist bones need a careful hand.

Leg and Foot Bones on a Soccer Field

Skeleton leg with thigh bone, kneecap, shin and foot bones, and a small soccer goal in the grass
The bones of a human leg are seen from the side, from the thigh bone with its rounded head down through the kneecap, shin and calf bones to the individual toe bones. A small soccer goal with a net stands in the grass in the background. The long thigh and shin bones are big, open areas, while the small foot bones and the goal net need a fine tip.

Skeleton Arm Bones by a Window

Skeleton arm with shoulder blade and hand beside a window with clouds and a bush
Shoulder blade, upper arm bone, forearm and a hand with separate finger bones hang in a room corner, with the elbow bent. A four-pane window on the right shows puffy clouds and a bush. The big upper arm bone is an open area, while the wrist and fingertip bones call for a fine tip.

Three Skeletons in Growing Sizes

Three smiling skeletons of different heights holding hands beside a round window with a tree and clouds
A small, a medium and a tall skeleton stand side by side, the small two holding hands with the next one up. All three have big round eyes and a smile, with ribs, spine and pelvis drawn as separate shapes. A round four-pane window with a tree and clouds hangs on the wall behind them. The tall skeleton’s long leg and arm bones are wide, open areas, while the ribs and toes need a fine tip.

Bone and Star Wreath

Ring of six bones and six stars around a central circle
Six cartoon bones and six five-pointed stars form a ring around an empty circle in the middle. The bones point in different directions like spokes, and a star sits in each gap between them. Every shape is large, with a thick, clean outline, so this is one of the easiest sheets in the set.

Fun Patterns

Front-Facing Skeleton with Hearts and Star

Smiling skeleton with raised hands, star and heart in ribs, heart and spirals on pelvis
A grinning skeleton faces forward with both hands raised and fingers spread, drawn on a plain white page. A star and a heart sit inside the rib cage, and the pelvis carries a heart between two spirals. The grinning teeth, finger bones and toes are small, so they need a sharp tip.

Heart Mandala with Flowers and Moons

Round mandala with a center heart, six flowers, hearts, moons, circles and an outer ring of leaf petals
A round mandala with a heart in a circle at the center, surrounded by six daisy-like flowers and small pointed leaves. The middle ring alternates hearts, crescent moons and plain circles, and an outer border of veined petals closes the design. The petals and circles are fairly roomy, while the flower petals are smaller.

All About Skeletons

How Many Bones Do We Have?

An adult human has 206 bones. Babies are born with around 300, and many of them start out partly as soft cartilage. Over the course of childhood, some of these bones grow together, which is how the number drops. The word “skeleton” comes from the Greek skeletos, which means “dried up.”

Bones are not dry or dead at all. They grow, they heal after a break, and they store calcium. Inside some bones, the bone marrow makes new blood cells.

Head, Chest and Spine

The skull is made of 22 bones. Only the lower jaw can move, and all the others are firmly joined together to protect the brain. The rib cage has twelve pairs of ribs plus the breastbone, and it shields the heart and lungs. The two lowest pairs are not attached at the front.

The spine has a double S shape that absorbs bumps, and soft discs between the vertebrae act as cushions. People have seven neck vertebrae, exactly as many as a giraffe.

Big Bones, Small Bones and Joints

The thigh bone is the longest and strongest bone in the body. The smallest is the stirrup in the middle ear, only about three millimeters long. Each hand has 27 bones and each foot has 26, so more than half of all the bones in your body are in your hands and feet.

Joints connect the bones. Hinge joints, like the elbow and knee, move in one direction, like a door. Ball and socket joints, like the shoulder and hip, move in every direction. Muscles pull on the bones through tendons to make them move.

Skeletons also belong to Halloween on October 31, right alongside jack-o’-lanterns, as decorations, costumes and funny characters. The skeletons on these sheets are friendly and laughing.

Tips for Printing and Coloring

Standard printer paper works well for crayons and colored pencils. If you plan to use markers or watercolors, try a heavier paper, about 24 lb or more, so the color does not bleed through. Open the PDF, choose A4 if your printer offers it, and pick “Fit to page” if you use US Letter paper. That keeps the whole picture inside the margins. Print in black and white to save ink.

Which sheet for which age:

  • Toddlers and preschoolers: the simple sheets with one large figure and wide open areas, which are easy to fill with chunky crayons.
  • Elementary school children: the party and music scenes, with instruments, balloons, hats and a bit more detail to work through.
  • Kids studying the body in science class: the bone study sheets, numbers 24 to 31.
  • Older kids and adults: take your time on the busier scenes and try shading with colored pencils.

Start with the largest areas and finish with the small details. A light pencil outline on the bones before adding color helps younger children stay inside the lines.

After Coloring: Craft Ideas

  • Halloween garland: cut out several colored skeletons, punch two holes at the top of each, and thread them onto string to hang across a window or mantel.
  • Window decorations: color a sheet with bright markers, rub a little cooking oil on the back, and tape it to a window so the light shines through.
  • Bone quiz cards: glue a colored study sheet onto cardboard, cut it out, and quiz each other on the skull, ribs, spine and thigh bone.
  • Greeting cards: fold a sheet of colored paper in half, glue a cut-out skeleton on the front, and write a Halloween or birthday message inside.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these coloring pages really free?

Yes. All 33 sheets are free to download and print. Just click a picture to open the PDF and send it to your printer. You can print as many copies as you need for home use.

What age are these skeleton pages for?

They cover a wide range. Toddlers can enjoy the simple sheets with one big figure. Elementary school children will like the party and music scenes. The bone study sheets, numbers 24 to 31, suit children who are learning about the body in science class.

Which colors are correct for a skeleton?

There is no wrong answer. In a museum, bones look ivory or creamy white. On the study sheets, though, you can give each group of bones its own color, such as one for the skull, one for the ribs and one for the spine. The friendly skeletons can wear clothes in any color, and pumpkin orange, moon yellow and midnight blue fit especially well at Halloween.

Are the skeletons scary?

No. These skeletons have round eyes and wide smiles, and they are busy waving, cooking, gardening and making music. There is nothing gory or frightening on any sheet, so they are fine for sensitive children too.

Can I use the pages in a classroom?

Yes. Teachers can print the sheets for a Halloween activity, a music lesson or a unit on the human body. The bone study pages work well as a quiet station activity. Children can color each bone group, then name the bones they know, such as the skull, ribs and thigh bone.

What is the best way to print them?

Open the PDF, choose A4 or “Fit to page,” and print in black and white on regular paper. For markers or paint, use thicker paper. If a sheet has too much detail for a young child, try a simpler one and save the busy scenes for later.
