Haunted House Facts for Kids

Old Stories and Victorian Style

Tales about houses where things do not seem quite right are very old. One of the oldest that survives comes from Pliny the Younger, who wrote around the year 100. He told of a house in Athens that was said to be haunted until a philosopher looked into the matter and found out what was going on.

The look we picture today comes mostly from spooky novels of the 18th and 19th centuries and from Victorian architecture. That style brought tall gables, pointed turrets, bay windows, decorated porches, and wooden shingles. A few parts are worth knowing when you color:

  • The gable is the triangle of wall under the roof.
  • A dormer is a small window that sticks out of the roof.
  • A weather vane sits on the roof peak and turns with the wind.
  • A widow’s walk is a little platform on the roof. In New England, people used it to look out over the sea.

Why Old Houses Creak

A crooked, creaky house does not need a ghost. Wood swells and shrinks with moisture and warmth, old beams sag over time, and foundations slowly settle. The creaking is just physics. That is why the houses in this gallery lean, tilt, and wobble in such a friendly way.

Pumpkins, Bats, Owls, and Fireflies

The jack-o’-lantern started in Ireland and Scotland, where people first carved turnips. In North America, pumpkins were easier to find and easier to carve, so they took over.

Bats are the only mammals that can truly fly. They like to sleep by day in attics, towers, and barns, and most species eat insects, which helps houses and gardens. Owls see very well in the dark, hear almost silently, and like to perch on high spots such as roof peaks and weather vanes. Fireflies glow through a chemical reaction in their bodies. The light is cold and gives off no heat, and you will find them in meadows and overgrown gardens.

How to Print and Color These Pages

Standard printer paper works well for crayons and colored pencils. If you want to use markers, gel pens, or watercolor, choose a heavier paper so the color does not soak through. The PDFs are made for A4. If your printer uses US Letter, choose “Fit to page” in the print dialog so nothing gets cut off at the edges. Print at 100 percent otherwise, and pick black and white to save color ink.

Which sheet for which age:

  • Toddlers and preschoolers: the simple pages with one big house, thick lines, and lots of open space.
  • Elementary school children: the room and garden scenes, with doors, windows, pumpkins, and friendly ghosts to sort out.
  • Older kids and adults: the detailed mansion, rooftop, and night scenes with shingles, shutters, railings, and patterns. These reward slow, careful coloring.

What to Do With Finished Pages

  • Make a window display. Tape the pages to a window and let the light shine through for a Halloween street scene.
  • Build a paper haunted house. Glue a colored page onto cardboard, fold it into a little house, and add cut-out pumpkins and bats.
  • Write a story. Ask your child who lives in the house and what happens there at night, then write it on the back.
  • Send a card. Fold a finished page into a greeting card for a friend or grandparent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these haunted house coloring pages really free?

Yes. All 32 sheets are free to download and print for personal use at home. Click a picture to open the PDF, then print it.

What age are the pages for?

There is something for nearly every age. Toddlers and preschoolers can start with the simple pages that have one large house. Elementary school children will enjoy the room and garden scenes, and the detailed pages suit older kids and adults.

Are the pages scary?

No. The houses are lopsided and cozy, with warm windows and friendly faces. The ghosts are smiling sheets with round eyes, the bats are round and cheerful, and the spiders are small and smiling. The owls and cats are sleepy or curious.

Which colors are correct for a haunted house?

There is no wrong choice, but classic picks are dark purple, moss green, or gray blue for the walls. Windows look best in warm yellow and orange. Pumpkin orange, moon yellow, and night blue round out the scene. For the daylight scene, sheet 28, you can color the house white with blue shutters.

Can I use the pages in a classroom?

Yes. Teachers are welcome to print copies for their class. The pages work well for a Halloween week, a lesson on old buildings and their parts, or a quiet activity. You can also pair them with creative writing about who lives in the house.

What supplies work best?

Crayons and colored pencils are the easiest for younger children. Markers and gel pens give bolder windows and pumpkins, especially on heavier paper. Try a yellow or orange pencil for the glowing windows, then shade around them with a darker color to make the light stand out.
