Learning About Angels

Where the Word Angel Comes From

The word angel travels a long road before it reaches English. It comes from the Latin angelus, which in turn comes from the Greek angelos, a word that simply means messenger. That same root shows up in the word for gospel, from euangelion, or good news, since a messenger is exactly what carries news. The Old English word engel is the direct ancestor of the word we use today. Angels are not unique to one faith either. They appear in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, where they are known as malaika. Across these traditions, the archangels Michael and Gabriel are named most often, and the archangel Raphael appears in the Book of Tobit.

Wings and Halos Through History

It might be surprising to learn that the earliest Christian images of angels had no wings at all. In the first few centuries, angels were painted as young men in simple tunics, much like any other figure of the time. Winged angels did not become the standard until around the fourth century, after which the image stuck. The halo has an even older history than Christianity itself. This ring of light around the head, sometimes called a nimbus, was already used in ancient art to mark gods and rulers as important before it was adopted into Christian imagery. One detail that often surprises colorists comes from the Book of Isaiah, which describes seraphim with six wings rather than two, two for flying, two covering the face, and two covering the feet. That description is part of why some older paintings show angels with far more than a single pair of wings.

The Nine Orders, Cherubs, and Putti

Around the year 500, a text called On the Celestial Hierarchy, written under the name Dionysius the Areopagite, organized angels into nine orders arranged in three groups of three: seraphim, cherubim, and thrones, then dominions, virtues, and powers, then principalities, archangels, and angels. This structure shaped how European artists arranged and depicted angels for centuries afterward. It also helps clear up a common mix up. The chubby, winged babies so often seen in Renaissance paintings and called cherubs are technically putti, a decorative figure descended from the Roman god of love, not the biblical cherubim, who are described as powerful guardian beings rather than infants. As for color, there is no single historical rule. White and gold are the familiar modern convention, but medieval and Renaissance painters regularly gave angels robes in red, blue, green, and pink, and painted their wings in colorful layers of feathers, sometimes even with peacock like eye patterns. For anyone coloring these pages, that means almost any color choice can be considered historically fair game.

Getting the Best Prints

These pages are simple to print well at home. Regular printer paper is perfectly fine for crayons, colored pencils, or fine tip markers. If you plan to use heavier markers, gel pens, or watercolor paint, switch to a slightly heavier cardstock or watercolor paper so the color does not bleed through to the next sheet.

Each PDF is formatted for standard A4 paper. When you print, choose the fit to page or actual size setting depending on your printer, and take a quick look at the print preview to confirm the angel fills the page the way you expect. Printing in black and white or grayscale is worth choosing too, since these are line drawings and do not need color ink.

Match the sheet to the colorist. The simplest, boldest outline pages, such as a plain standing or kneeling angel, are the easiest choice for toddlers and young children who are still learning to stay inside the lines. Pages with more folds in the robe, layered feather detail in the wings, or a full mandala background are better suited to older children, teens, and adults who want a longer, more detailed project to sit with.

Ideas for Your Finished Sheets

Once a page is colored, there are plenty of simple ways to put it to use.

  • Frame a favorite angel portrait for a nursery, bedroom, or hallway gallery wall.
  • Turn a colored Christmas angel into a handmade holiday card or gift tag for the season.
  • Color a guardian angel sheet as a gentle keepsake or sympathy card for someone going through a loss.
  • Punch a hole in a few of the smaller angels and thread them on ribbon to make a simple paper garland.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these angel coloring pages free?

Yes. All 32 pages in this collection are free to download and print for personal and classroom use. Click the picture of the sheet you want to open the full PDF.

What age are they suitable for?

Because the collection ranges from very easy outlines to detailed patterned designs, there is something for nearly every age. The simplest sheets work well for toddlers and early elementary children, while the mandala and pattern style pages give older kids, teens, and adults a more detailed project to enjoy.

Which colors are correct for coloring an angel?

There is no single correct answer. White and gold robes are the most familiar modern convention, but medieval and Renaissance painters regularly used red, blue, green, and pink for angel robes, and wings were often colored rather than plain white. Any color choice can be considered historically reasonable, so feel free to color freely.

Can these pages be used in a classroom?

Yes, teachers are welcome to print these pages for classroom use, such as holiday art projects or quiet time activities. Because the sheets are free and printable at home or at school, no special license is needed for personal or classroom copies.

What is the difference between a cherub and an angel?

In the Bible, cherubim are described as powerful guardian beings, not babies. The chubby, winged infants often called cherubs in popular art and home decor are technically putti, a Renaissance tradition that descends from the Roman god of love. Angels, cherubim, and putti all appear throughout Christian art, but they come from different sources and mean different things.

What paper size are the printables?

Every sheet in this collection is formatted for standard A4 paper. Use your printer’s fit to page setting if your default paper size is different, and choose actual size or 100 percent scale if you want the printed angel to match the size shown in the PDF.
