Getting to Know Father’s Day

Father’s Day is a holiday set aside to thank and celebrate fathers and father figures. It sounds simple, but the holiday took an unusually long road to get onto the calendar, and it still lands on a different day depending on where you live.

Where the Day Comes From

The idea traces back to Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, who began pushing for an official day to honor fathers starting in 1909. Her own father was a Civil War veteran who raised six children on his own after his wife died, and Dodd wanted a day that recognized what he had done. Spokane held the first Father’s Day celebration in June of 1910.

A Slow Road to an Official Holiday

Mother’s Day became a legal holiday in the United States in 1914, but Father’s Day did not receive the same recognition until 1972, nearly sixty years later. For decades, it was dismissed by many as a commercial invention rather than a meaningful tradition, and lawmakers repeatedly declined to make it official. It took over sixty years of persistence before the holiday finally became permanent.

A Different Date Around the World

In the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and many other countries, Father’s Day falls on the third Sunday of June. In Italy, Spain, and Portugal, it is celebrated on March 19, which is Saint Joseph’s Day. In Germany, it lands on Ascension Day, forty days after Easter, so the date actually moves every year. The German holiday also grew out of a different tradition entirely: groups of men taking outings together, often pulling a small cart, which is why it is still sometimes called Men’s Day there. Unlike Christmas or Easter, Father’s Day never developed fixed colors, required symbols, or a traditional meal. The necktie is an advertising cliche, not an actual custom, which means there is no wrong way to color these pages.
