Kids ask big questions about space long before they learn the science behind the answers, and coloring is a gentle way to sit with those questions a little longer. Here are a few facts that make the pictures in this set feel a little more real.

Where Space Begins

There is no wall between the sky and space. By the most common agreement among scientists, space begins at an altitude of about 100 kilometers, a boundary called the Karman line. Below it, we call the air the atmosphere; above it, we call it space. In truth the air does not stop at that height, it simply keeps thinning out until there is almost nothing left to breathe or to carry sound. That is also why space is silent: sound needs air or some other material to travel through, and a vacuum has none. An explosion far from Earth would happen without a single sound reaching anyone nearby.

Why We Call Them Planets and Astronauts

The word “planet” comes from the Greek word planetes, meaning wanderer, because early stargazers noticed that a handful of bright points moved against the fixed pattern of stars. “Astronaut” is built from astron, meaning star, and nautes, meaning sailor, so the word literally means “star sailor.” Russian space travelers are called cosmonauts instead, a word that translates to “universe sailor.” Both words describe the same job with two different pictures in mind, one looking up at the stars and one looking out at the whole of space.

Comets, Meteors, Meteorites, and Asteroids

These four words get mixed up often, but each one means something specific. An asteroid is a rocky object still out in space. A meteor is the streak of light that appears when a piece of rock or dust burns up entering the atmosphere, sometimes called a shooting star. A meteorite is whatever survives that trip and actually lands on the ground. A comet is different from all three: it is a body of ice and dust that grows a glowing cloud and a tail once it gets close enough to the sun to start melting.

Before You Start Coloring

Regular printer paper works fine for most of these pages, though the sheets with fine linework, such as the mandalas and detailed night sky scenes, hold up better on slightly heavier paper if your child likes to press hard with markers. Set your printer to A4 and to “fit to page” or “actual size” rather than “borderless,” so none of the artwork gets cropped at the edges. The moon pages mix darker, smoother plains with fewer craters against lighter highlands that are heavily cratered, the way the real moon looks, and larger craters get a central peak and terraced walls.
