MANNERISM

what is mannerism?

Mannerism Art was not only a style, but it was stylish in its manner. The word’s origins come from the Italian word maniera, which means “style” or “manner”.

DEFINITION

Mannerism was a particular and somewhat peculiar “way” of doing things, in this case, art. Others defined it simply as the style of art during the 16th Century.

influences

There were a lot of historical influences that impacted Mannerism and its style, with the the Church and its influence on the masses being a considerable factor.

form: towards expression

The Mannerists’ style was clearly observed in their subject matter, as the limbs on human figures are depicted more elongated and not in anatomical proportion.

color: a sense of falsity

Mannerists also explored an exaggerated palette of colors and many artists used non-local colors with strong contrasts.

architecture

Mannerism architecture was known as a “play” on the harmony of structure related to the Renaissance period.

sculpture

Mannerism sculpture was like painting with the elongation of figures and non-naturalistic tendencies, where proportions are not symmetrical.
